2. Method 1: Using the 8171 SMS Service

This method is ideal for citizens using basic feature phones without an internet connection:

  1. Open your mobile phone's SMS composition screen.
  2. Carefully type your 13-digit CNIC number. Do not add hyphens (e.g. -) or spaces. Correct example: 3520212345678.
  3. Send this message to recipient shortcode 8171.
  4. Standard cellular carrier network tariffs (approx. Rs. 1 to Rs. 2 plus tax) apply. Ensure your SIM card has a minimal active balance.
  5. Wait for the reply. The official return sender will be displayed simply as 8171.

3. Method 2: Using the 8171.bisp.gov.pk Web Portal

If you have access to a smartphone or computer with internet, the web portal is 100% free to query:

  1. Open your browser and navigate to https://8171.bisp.gov.pk/.
  2. In the first input box, enter the applicant woman’s 13-digit CNIC number.
  3. In the secondary box, enter the 4-digit numerical Captcha security code shown in the image.
  4. Click the green button labeled "Maloom Karein" (Check Status).
  5. The system will retrieve and display your current household status directly from the central database.

4. Interpreting Portal Status Screens and Messages

5. Troubleshooting Gateway Delays and Errors

  • No SMS reply received: Telecommunication networks experience congestion during payment release weeks. Wait 24 hours before re-sending, or verify online via the web portal.
  • "Invalid CNIC": Verify that exactly 13 digits were entered without accidental spaces or letters.
